In a documentary titled No Más Bebés women speak against their will underwent a hysterectomy, a medical procedure in which the uterus is removed.
Controlling population growth
This was done to control the ‘population growth among Latinos in the state”. Many women say they were told that their uterus was removed after the procedure.
“The doctor came in and said, ‘we have removed your fallopian tubes,” when I asked’ why? ‘ He said: ‘You have signed for it. ” I answered, “I ” said one of the women. “I said, ‘I remember nothing.” I have not spoken to my family about it. I never talked about it with anyone. ”
California government stated that forced sterilization was necessary to reduce the expenditure of the state. However, the documentary suggests that the program was intended to rid the society of “undesirables” through eugenics.
The program was reportedly launched in 1909 and ran until 1963, when the policy was gradually phased out. Victims filed a lawsuit against the Los Angeles County Hospital, where sterilizations took place, but drew the short straw.
